Understanding BLP

I

We start each session by saying “Good Morning / Afternoon”, singing songs and rhymes and talking about our weekend or daily experiences.

I

We practise taking turns in conversations, listening to others and building our self confidence to speak in front of a familiar group.

I

During the Nursery session, we benefit greatly from adult support across the activities where we are encouraged to use a developing range of vocabulary.

I

We can take home a library book each week which must be returned for a new book to be issued.

I

We are encouraged to use a wide range of writing tools which are available in both the indoor and outdoor environment.

I

The children’s hand eye coordination is developed through construction and throwing and catching activities.

I

Pre-reading skills are developed across the curriculum in activities such as matching games, sound games, listening to and enjoying a range of stories and learning rhymes and songs.

I

We are taught how to hold writing tools correctly and develop good habits.

I

Snack times are spent in small groups. This is a relaxed, social time for us to talk together.

SPRING 2 Topic - SPRING AND LIFE CYCLES

Building Learning Power:

Our learning muscles will be stretched this term as we focus on being Questioning Queen Bees as we raise questions around our classroom and school environment.

Communication, Language & Literacy

Book week is an exciting week for the children to explore a range of different books from around the world. There will be lots of games and activities happening in the Nursery to accompany Book Week, including a dress up day for the children to come to school as their favourite book character.

We will be focusing on books written by Eric Carle as part of our life cycle topic, looking at ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and ’The Tiny Seed’.

A wide range of writing tools are available for the children to access in both the indoor and outdoor environment. The Nursery children are shown how to hold writing tools correctly and develop good reading habits. We will be focusing on correctly forming letters this term and writing our names.

BASICS & Characteristics of Learning

This half term we will be focusing on following two characteristics:

Playing and Exploring – using senses to explore the world around us.

Active Learning – bouncing back after difficulties.

Personal, Social & Emotional

This term we will be building the children’s confidence to talk both in small groups and in front of the whole class.

Children will be encouraged to talk about things they have done at the weekend, at home or to share something that they have made with the class.

We will also be having parents come and join us for story reading and our ‘Learning Together’ sessions.

Physical Development

Gross motor skills for this term will be focusing on throwing and catching a variety of different sized balls.

The children will play team games which involve using these skills.

Fine motor skills will be developed through a range of fun finger gym activities to increase hand muscle strength, like threading, weaving, using tweezers and Lego.

Mathematics

This term the children will be exploring money in our ‘Garden Shop’.

They will have opportunities to count money, look at the different coins and recognise different numerals in the shop.

We will be learning a range of different money songs and rhymes.

Children will also be looking at measuring different plants. We will talk about the different sizes of plants and will also order and group the plants in accordance to their size.

Expressive Arts & Design

Imaginative play takes place daily in Nursery through a variety of play situations, but particularly in the role play area.

This half term our role play area will be a ‘Garden Shop’. The children may like to explore being a shopkeeper or a customer in the shop.

We will also be making a range of spring art including the children making 3D spring flowers.

They will be able to experiment with a range of different drawing materials during the still life drawing of a flower and experimenting with different textures in our creative art activities.

Understanding of the World

The focus this term is Spring and Life Cycles. We will look at the different life cycles of chickens, frogs and caterpillars.

Children will be able to observe a chicken being hatched from an egg.

As a class we will grow a range of different plants and flowers and observe what happens to them over time.
