Year 1 Curriculum MapSpring 2 Topic - LOCAL ENVIRONMENT
It is a fun filled term so be prepared to get your hands dirty. We will then be creating our very own version of Michael Rosen’s ’We’re Going On a Bear Hunt’.
We will then be reading a story for another culture, ‘Bringing the rain to Kapiti Plain.’ We will be using interesting openers and adjectives to describe the settings.
This half term we are looking at numbers 50 first. The children will build on previous learning of counting in twos and go beyond 20 up to 50. They will also apply previous learning of one more and one less to counting forwards and backwards in twos. For example, two more than and two less than. The 100 grid will be used to spot and discuss patterns that emerge when counting in 2s, 5s and 10s.
Then the children will explore non-standard units to weigh objects and now focus on comparing the mass of two objects. They use balance scales to compare two objects and use the language of ‘heavier’, ‘lighter’ and ‘equal’.
This half term we are going to be learning all about animals! We are going to be learning about the differences between fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals. We are also going to be looking at what is means to be a carnivore, a herbivore or an omnivores.
What is your favourite animal? Can you describe it using adjectives?
Do you know how to use Google? We will be learning to use this search engine safely to help us find interesting pictures and then copy and paste them into a Word document.
Get ready to laugh your socks off as we learn all about the exciting life of Charlie Chaplin. A significant person from history who came from Ealing. We will learn to mime and even put on our own silent theatre productions.
We are going to continue to explore pitch in music by making different sounds with our voices and a range of musical instruments.
Art & Design Technology
In D.T. we will be exploring a range of skills needed for designing and making a moving picture by using levers. We will be practising our skills of cutting and joining.
What can you do to protect the Earth?
We will be learning about caring for our world and will be looking at different creation stories.
Get your captain hats on because we are going to be sailing around the United Kingdom where we will be naming the 4 countries and their capital cities.
This term there will be a strong focus on how to use our core muscles to help us balance. We will be experimenting with this through gymnastics and using different equipment.
What is your favourite colour? This term we will be learning how to say the colours of the rainbow in French.
There are lots of events in our school calendar this term — Book Week and Science & Maths Week will take the focus of assemblies as will the theme of forgiveness.
Daring to be Different. This half term we will be learning about how to stay safe online and at home. We will also be discussing who you can talk to if you are feeling worried about something.
