Summer 1 Topic - Significant PeopleBuilding Learning Power:
Year 1 will continue to use lots of learning muscles. Through hot-seating activities we will focus on being a questioning queen bee.
English
Have you ever been really surprised? Handa’s Surprise will take you on an exciting adventure through the African desert. What animals will you meet? What exotic smells do you notice? What delicious fruits might you see? We will be using our acting skills to re-enact the story to really engage our senses. Then we will write in the past-tense and use adjectives and adverbs to bring it to life.
Get your basket, just like Handa did, and gather your writing techniques to surprise yourself, your parents and your teachers!
Maths
Then they will learn fractions. The children explore finding a half using shapes and sets of objects, using the vocabulary ‘half’ and ‘whole’. Also they will develop their understanding of equal parts and non-equal parts and relate this to a shape of object being split up into four equal parts.
Science
1DS’s assembly will teach us all the basics of the four Seasons and we will use our science lessons to gain a deeper understanding of spring, summer, autumn, and winter. What causes the seasons to change? Why do the leaves fall off the trees in autumn? When it is summer here in England, what season is it in Australia? All these questions and more will be explored.
We will also be designing a science experiment to measure the rainfall in summer and we will record our data every week. Some seasons may be windy but this science unit is going to blow you away.
Computing
This half term we will be programming our friends to follow our directions. We will then move onto programming beebots and using them to find treasure in and around the classroom.
