Spring 1 Topic - ENVIRONMENTS

Building Learning Power:

Year 2 will be using lots of learning muscles this term. We will need to be Planning Pandas in English so that we can plan and write our very own story. We will be Reasoning Robins in maths when we discuss how we found out our answers to multiplication calculations.

Do you know where the ‘Wild Things’ are? In our first unit we will discover who the ‘Wild Things’ are and where they came from. We will follow Max’s exciting adventure and write our own exciting version of The Wild Things.

How horrid can ‘Horrid Henry’ really be? This term we will discover the delights of Horrid Henry and complete a narrative unit on extended stories. We will read the chapter book as a class and summarise the plot, looking at links between events. We will analyse pieces of dialogue and re-enact and improvise new dialogue.

Finally, we will evaluate the story, discussing techniques used by the author to sustain the reader’s interest.

It’s time to multiply!

Using grouping and patterns Year 2 will be learning their 2, 5, 10 and 3 times tables and recognising that grouping can help us to share. This half term we will be data analysts and use our knowledge of tally charts, block graphs and pictograms. We will be getting our rulers out and measuring and comparing lengths towards the end of the half term.

How do we change as we grow? What changes take place?

During this unit on animals we will focus mainly on humans and the changes that take place as we grow. We will also be finding out about the basic needs of humans for survival (e.g. water, food and air) and why each of these are so important. We will also have a focus on healthy eating, discussing the different food groups and why we need to eat a healthy balanced diet.

We are researchers. In computing we will be learning how to search the Internet safely and effectively. We will also be preparing a presentation to show to our classmates.

Whilst looking at our local area, we will delve a little deeper into the history of Ealing to see what we can learn about the place so many of us call home.

We will be exploring instruments and symbols allowing the children to create their own notation for different sounds.

Art & Design Technology

Get your paint brushes ready! Year 2 are going to be exploring different techniques with paint including pointillism and washes. We will look at the work of Seurat and Turner as our inspiration.

Religious Education

Our RE unit is all about learning from stories. We will learn that there are different faith traditions and that the various faith traditions give believers guidance for living.

We will be studying our local area by finding the physical and human features that are around us. We will be asking children if we should change anything in the school environment and through the completion of surveys, we will able to understand the importance of the opinions of others.

Physical Education

Get your dancing shoes ready! This term our indoor PE will be focused around dance. Outside, we will develop ball skills with Fit for Sport.

Bonjour! This half term we will recap numbers and greetings.

Assemblies this term will focus on Identity and Safety. We will discuss personal qualities, attitudes, skills, attributes and achievements and what influences these. Children will be also informed of strategies on how to keep safe in different settings.

Staying safe at home This term children will be learning what is meant by charity, fundraising, celebrating differences and how to stay safe online. The children will also learn the PANTS rule.

2KF and 2MB will be performing their class assemblies this term (2RR will be in Spring 2). This gives the children the chance to perform and share what they have been learning.

Global Citizenship

In considering our local area we will examine how human behaviour has affected the environment. We will be developing our sense of the wider world and links and connections between different places.
