On the 17th of October myself and other NQTs attended a fantastic course about increasing the level of engagement in English for all pupils.
We watched videos of exemplar lessons which allowed us to see effective strategies in place. The importance of discussion was the focus of the session and we could see from the videos how beneficial it was. I particularly liked the idea of making children stand up on the carpet when they are answering a question, as well as always talking in full sentences. I have implemented this in my classroom. Whilst I have found it to be beneficial for some students, my EAL students struggle with having to talk in full sentences therefore I have started to give them sentence starters and allow them the opportunity to repeat what I am saying.
The training provided me with a lot of ideas, although it was mainly focused on year 6, there were lots of strategies I have adapted to suit the needs of my class.
