Year 4 Curriculum MapSpring 1 Topic - RULING ROMANS
Building Learning Power:
Year 4 will be continuing to develop our learning muscles this term. We will be collaborative koalas as we work together to adapt stories into play scripts. We will be questioning queen bees as we challenge our understanding in science.
Lights, camera, action! Could you be the next Shakespeare? Year Four will be creating their own play scripts this term. Using our class text ‘The Witches’ by Roald Dahl, we will collaborate with our classmates to create astonishing, action-filled adventures. To get a head start, see if you can find the script to your favourite TV show.
You may want discuss key features such as, stage directions, scenes and props. Do you know what a stanza is? Can you find rhyming words for play? The children will be exposed to a range of poetry types such as Kennings and the children will plan and write their own poem!
This term, the children will continue to multiply and vide using written strategies. We will be looking at applying multiplication and division into real life scenarios and testing the children on all of their times tables up to 12!
In addition, we will be learning about area? How much carpet does Mr Rai need to carpet the school? Year 4 will be learning how to calculate area and apply this to real life problems.
Our science lessons will send your heart racing! We will be investigating our pulse rate with exercise.
In addition, if that isn’t food for thought enough, we will also be investigating how we get energy from the food that we eat! We will be learning about the importance of healthy eating and the nutrients in different foods and drinks.
Listen up! We are musicians. Year Four will be creating their own backing track using a Digital Audio Workstation.
Veni, vidi, vici – Conquering the subject of Roman settlements will be our focus in history this term. Have you ever wondered who created some of the roads we use today?
Year 4 will be taking part in ukulele lessons this term with a specialist teacher. We will also make our own backing tracks.
Art & Design Technology
Year Four will be looking at things from different perspectives as they learn about viewpoints. We will also have our Roman-themed art week and the opportunity to design brooches for the Roman army.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in the Gurdwara? Year Four will be learning about Guru Nanak and his teachings. We will discover how Sikhs worship and celebrate.
A mari usque ad mare – the roaming Romans travelled from sea to sea. What impact did they have on the areas they invaded?
Strictly come dancing continues as 4CV and 4MC take to the dance floor.
Splish, splash, splosh. 4JA have the opportunity to get their toes wet at Gurnell swimming pool.

Assemblies this term will focus on Identity and Safety. We will discuss personal qualities, attitudes, skills, attributes and achievements and what influences these. Children will be also informed of strategies on how to keep safe in different settings.
Living in the Wider World
This term children will be learning what is meant by charity, fund raising, celebrating differences and how to stay safe online. The children will also learn to challenge gender stereotypes.
Have you ever eaten in a langar? Year Four will be visiting the Gurdwara to learn about Sikhism. Sharpen your pencils – Year Four have their Roman themed art week this term.
What do you know about the Romans? Year Four will be looking at the impact of colonisation in Europe.
